A Soldier’s Tale: Reuniting with His Canine Companion After a 5,000-Kilometer Journey
|After serving 10 years in Afghanistan, Sean Laidlaw was deployed to Syria, where he took on the role of a bomb disposal expert. In February 2018, while on duty to dispose of homemade bombs in Syria, Sean’s attention was drawn to a peculiar sound emanating from the ruins of a bombed school. Upon investigation, he discovered a frightened puppy amidst the debris, alongside four lifeless canine companions.
Without hesitation, Sean brought the puppy back to his barracks and bestowed upon him the name Barrie. Thus began a special bond between the courageous soldier and the little dog. Barrie became Sean’s constant companion, accompanying him from the moment he woke up, through meals, work, and even during drives. Sean fashioned a necklace for Barrie using a piece of his bulletproof vest and a teddy bear.
Barrie, the rescued dog, remained by Sean’s side wherever he went.
While many might see Sean as the savior of Barrie, Sean, in turn, expressed immense gratitude for his four-legged friend. Barrie became more than just a companion; he provided Sean with a reprieve from the harsh realities of war, helping him cope with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
Sean, sharing his experience, mentioned, “The boys in Syria loved playing and coaching Barrie. If anyone is unhappy or having a bad day, it will come and sit on their lap.”
Despite the strong bond formed, Sean had to part ways with Barrie when he returned to the UK for leave in April 2018, unable to return to Syria due to the cancellation of his assignment. Determined to reunite with Barrie, Sean enlisted the help of the War Paws organization based in Iraq, which aids soldiers in locating their lost pets while serving abroad. Sean also initiated a GoFundMe page to raise funds for Barrie’s journey to England.
The process involved bringing Barrie to Iraq in April 2018, where he underwent vaccination and examination before being transported to Jordan for a two-month quarantine. Although initial plans to transfer Barrie to England in October 2018 were thwarted due to lost documents, he was eventually taken to Paris.
On November 3, 2018, after a 12-hour flight from Essex to Paris, Sean’s heartfelt wish came true as he reunited with Barrie at Charles de Gaulle airport, marking the end of a nearly 5,000-kilometer journey through 5 countries and 2 war zones. Barrie, no longer a small puppy but a fully grown adult dog, recognized his owner, bringing immense joy to Sean. Reflecting on the reunion, Sean exclaimed, “The moment I met Barrie again at the airport was probably the most wonderful moment of my life.
